Ballerup Sauna and Winter Bath
In a shared commitment to inclusivity and modern design in collaboration with Ballerup Municipality, Ballerup Idrætsby, and East Kilbride Badet, a new sauna and winter bath extension has been designed.
Developed from an earlier concept from 2022 the renewed and expanded vision for this project builds on a shared ambition to create a space open to all, regardless of age, gender, or mobility. With a strong focus on accessibility, the vision is to create a place where warmth, well-being, and breathtaking views of nature come together in a shared, inclusive experience.

Architectural character
The pitched roof draws inspiration from traditional Chinese tea houses, adding a unique architectural identity while subtly echoing the form of nearby buildings. Clad in wood with visible gutters and an external rectangular transition detail, the design balances cultural reference with functional durability, blending with the wooden façade and natural surroundings.
Inclusive design
The building is designed to accommodate up to 34 guests, including dedicated space for wheelchair users. Generous benches, a calm lounge area, and convenient shower facilities ensure a seamless and welcoming experience. Accessibility has been thoughtfully integrated into every detail, making comfort a shared experience for all visitors.
A lightweight connection
As a pavilion structure, the sauna offers a gentle architectural counterpoint to the existing swimming hall. It stands as a distinct yet harmonious addition, blending seamlessly with its surroundings. The lightness and warmth of the wood establishes a smooth and inviting transition from the functional atmosphere of the swimming hall and the tranquil sauna environment. Inside, natural materials and calming tones define the experience, reinforcing the project’s intent to promote relaxation and sensory presence.
